BOE meeting recap

The Morongo Unified School District held its regular Board meeting Tuesday night, featuring celebrations of outgoing Board members, acknowledgments of recent student achievements and updates on community engagement for the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).

Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education Dr. Graciela Gutierrez presented information on the 2024-25 LCAP. Developed through a collaborative process involving parents and educational partners, the LCAP is a guiding document that allocates LCFF funds over a three-year plan to support student learning and reflect community priorities. The plan emphasizes academic achievement for college and career readiness, strong school and community partnerships and improved graduation rates. Public forums on the LCAP will be held throughout the year to gather further community input.

After the LCAP presentation the Board moved into regular session opening with a recognition of CTE Emergency Medical Responder instructor Kent Weiss. Recently, one of Weiss’ students used skills learned in his class to save a family member’s life after a critical injury.

“This remarkable story serves as a powerful reminder of the real-life impact of the education we provide,” said Board member John Cole, commending Weiss for empowering students with life-saving skills.

Principals James Powell and Dr. Jessica Miller also received recognition from No Kid Hungry for implementing the Breakfast in the Classroom program, which increased breakfast participation significantly at Oasis Elementary and Morongo Valley Elementary.

“Breakfast in the classroom has been proven to increase test scores, reduce absenteeism and ensure children are fed and ready to learn,” said No Kid Hungry representative Daisy Munguia.

The Board then honored outgoing members Kerri Condley, John Cole and Robert Hamilton for their dedication to the District.

"It’s the end of a chapter but the beginning of a new one,” remarked Board member Chris Claire.

Superintendent Dr. Patricio Vargas expressed gratitude, saying, “Each of them made tremendous contributions to this District and I am grateful for their work supporting the students of the Morongo Basin.”

In the agendized session, the Board unanimously approved a tentative agreement with CSEA and the School Plans for Student Achievement across MUSD.
