We have seen a remarkable improvement in Kindergarten reading proficiency during the 2023-2024 school year after implementing Magnetic Reading Foundations and key Science of Reading instructional components. Our student scholars achieved a 38-percentage-point increase in placing at or above grade level in reading!
Key elements of our program’s success included professional learning workshops for staff, literacy coaching, and ongoing assessments and evaluation of test data. The District’s student scholars achieved notable gains in foundational literacy skills such as phonological awareness, phonics, and high-frequency words. As a result, the overall need for intervention has decreased.
Moving forward, we are extending the program to Grade 1 for 2024-2025 and Grade 2 in 2025-2026, continuing our Reader by 9 Initiative to help all students achieve reading proficiency by the end of third grade. However, our work does not stop there. We will continue to work with all staff across all levels to ensure that not only our students are reading by 9, but they are also Ready by 9th!
